Shove some twigs here and there…

Remember how I was saying a photoshoot warped my perception of a designer?  Per Zennstr√∂m has done the same thing with Sandra Backlund’s collection.  The strength of Backlund’s giant knits means that they stand alone fairly well hence why in her own lookbooks, there is very minimal styling, letting the pieces to speak for themselves, which is Backlund’s natural style anyway.  So it’s a little odd to see that a) Zennstr√∂m has photographed the pieces in a way that shows a more playful facet to them and that stylist Pirjo Niemel√§ has dared to mix the pieces up with colour blocked unitards.  These images forming a set entitled ‘Pure’ are from Falter magazine, a fairly new fashion magazine to the mass of London-based indie fash mags, that themed its second issue around the theme of ‘purity’.  Perhaps they picked Backlund’s pieces because they are a very concentrated essence of ‘pure’ but the resulting pics gives me another perspective and something not so pure…

  1. The bright unitards really add something to those chunky and soft knits. I think I especially like the image with the roses sprouting out of one girl’s collar…it is intriguing.

  2. I love that crazy blond, almost gray hair on that second model. It reminds me that I was going to color my hair silver as a teenager but I never did. Maybe now is the time. And also the time to learn how to knit…

  3. It’s all fascinating. I love how people’s ideas mesh together with other people’s ideas, and we get totally unique visions.

  4. i love the colours..and how it looks like youre trying to cover them up by layering big, heavy wool blankets on them

  5. i love those knits with the block coloured leotards, i can’t stop looking at the pictures, there’s just something about them that’s so unexpected but so perfect!

  6. i’m sorry… i don’t like this. mainly for the reason that, yes, backlund’s knitwear stands on it’s own. not that a stylist could not have a field day with it, but this does no justice to the pieces. to me, they become more subdued with all the props. i would love to see someone style her knitwear in a story for everyday wear (like going to the corner store for milk). that would be interesting.

  7. These photos are awesome, but the knits are even better… if only I could afford ’em! Year after year, my goal of learning to knit goes unmet! Sigh! Anywho… you always have the best and most up-to-the minute fashion news!

  8. Wow! This is the kind of thing that makes me love life!!! The textures and colors together drive me wild. Oh and the grey blond hair helps a little too.

  9. Sandra Buckland’s work is so directional it hurts! Her pieces are beautiful on their own, but I think this photoshoot brings a whole new life to the work, also showing a more humorous side to her ‘serious’ knitwear. LOVE LOVE LOVE! Cx

  10. oh no i know what you mean when you look at the photo you dont even look at the knit your just drawn to the styling and those head twig thingies! they dont need it! the knit wear is great ive just finished a 1yr placement in a knitwear company and ive learnt soooo much and got so many ideas now ive just got to put them together to create my final collection for graduate fashion week!!!! scarey!!!

  11. I don’t mind this styling, although I don’t entirely get why it would be done like this if the issues theme was ‘pure.’
None the less, at least it’s pleasant to look at and reminds me of childrens picture books.

  12. Hey, that’s great Sandra and I are pretty good friends, I also wrote a little something about her on my blog too.
    Check it out.
