The Sarty Flick Through

Unoriginal me isn't going to be the only one who'll be doing flick throughs with The Sartorialist book, which landed on my desk a few days ago.  It is a picture tome, but unlike other picture tomes, it's novel-sized in width and height but thick like a dictionary, making it a little hard to hold down, scan or photograph.  So ensues a predictable quickie video flickthrough, which actually was longer than I had anticipated given that there's 500 pages to go through.  What can't be seen in the flickthrough is the quality of paper/scent of it (both very nice to feel and smell…) and the little excerps of text where Scott Schuman attaches selected anecdotes to images, odes to his favourite subjects to shoot such as Giovanna, Julie, Carine and Eva (all on first names basis of course…), and slightly defensive mini-explanations to some of the criticisms his blog gets…such as only shooting 'fashion' people (he doesn't really, when looking at the breadth of images as a whole…) and shooting people who can afford expensive labels (unfounded by the $5 Prada-esque lab coat guy in Stockholm).  Text-loving me of course would have loved a few more tidbits but images are the name of the streetstyle game and I've already marked out a few for revisiting on a day when the brain is feeling a bit uninspired…

  4. timely here also! i just bought it thursday, am planning to do a little review too, once i get settled from all my travels and have time to peruse this little gem. interestingly (perhaps?) i hadn’t planned on buying it, although i knew it was out there…was at barns & noble looking for an instructional book on encaustics (i’m an artist), and then “the sartorialist book” called to me from the shelf…actually, it sort of shouted. next thing, i was at the checkout, book in hand.

  7. Is it bad that I have a a lot of those images saved to an ‘inspiration folder’ of sorts, on my hard drive? lol But I’m glad you did a flip through, b.c there are also many pics in the book which I’ve never seen before. Plus, having the book is just so much more satisfying.

    Sophia: Yeah I did see it though I thought it was a bit misleading because it made it look like that pic was from the book but it’s not… he selected pics from 2006-8 and that pic was taken in 2009….

  24. would love to see a book version of your blog. have no idea how that would be achieved or what it would encompass (preferably large chunks of text) but it would be amazing.

Damn you susie i wasnt gonna get that before the flick through, i had convinced myself that i didnt need a book full of pictures of people standing beside vintage bikes on cobbled streets. but it actually looks lovely im always suprised at the amazing light and crispness in his pictures. and at 2.27 does that man actually have some playing cards in his top pocket instead of a hanky?

  27. Thank you for the video, I’ve invested in a copy also but it’s not come yet.
    I agree that it would be nice to have more writing.. somehow whenever I see something inspiring, I always wonder what the person was thinking and whether there is something I missed when looking,
    Also, I used to think his photography, although professional, lacked articism – but after seeing the vid I think I’ve somewhat accepted that you can have more than one kind of shot.

I just saw my faves in the new ad (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U00iCwMRZ6Q) for the new D&G Anthology collection, and I was thrilled! I had to go out and buy all 5 of them. (I know, I know, but perfume is my guilty pleasure!) There’s a scent for every day of the week, it’s fantastic!
