I never thought fashion blogger sketching/illustrating as a genre could
be taken so far as to become a plausible aesthetic backbone of a
magazine. But Sketchbook, a new mag that I think is finished, but not
out yet, has chosen Fashion Bloggers as their theme to kick start their first issue and literally illustrating their point on the cover. I do
fear what with the growing amount of bloggers' exposure, people have
started to roll their eyes with cynicism and thought "Urgh.
Not.Another.Blogger Not that bloody blogger again…BLOG OFF!". (**EDIT** Just had to correct that faux statement lest it causes offense to new bloggers…) That said, just going by
Sketchbook's online visuals, I'm thinking they've taken the subject of
fashion bloggers and done something interesting text wise and given it a distinct visual treatment too.
For a start, they've asked John Paul Thurlow, man who's on a magazine
sketching mission, to illustrated me on the cover. I'm extremely glad
that John, found this particular image on Page 12 of Google Images as
it a) features the wonderful fabric jewellery of Giia and b) makes me
look like I've had a radical bobbed hair cut (he likened it to Anna
Wintour which is a leeeetle terrifying…).
I did the interview with Sketchbook's journalist a while back so bear with me but would it be weird to say that reading a quote of mine made me laugh. Yes, I am that sad human being, that chortles at quotes that I myself said…
"I've never had a moment where I've seen someone and thought, I want to be [dressed] exactly like that person, because as a kid I wanted to be everyone. People like Claudia Kishi, or a random actress on a Cantonese soap opera…or a member of Shampoo."
The ickle ickle preview images on the homepage looks altogether promising… an interview with Fred Butler about fashion on film, a feature on Diane Pernet (it would be WRONG to have a fashion bloggers' issue without her…), features on photography David Benjamin Sherry and jelly makers Bompas & Parr and then these wonderful illustrations inspired by bloggers…
Fashion Toast illustrated by Clare Owen
Jak & Jil illustrated by Anna Zejmo
Facehunter illustrated by Donya Todd
The fashion spreads also look pretty varied too…
I'm now waiting to receive the issue so I can sniff the paper and confirm that it smells good…
BLOG ON ! : )

ha, looks cool 🙂 Bloggers are the new rockstars by the looks of it, every time I open a magazine theres a new one, usually younger than me so it makes me feel bad. I love your blog, you write it really well, with most blogs its just the title then a picture, so yours is completely fresh (if that makes any sense) xx
wow looks great!! il have to try get my hands on one of those!!
xxx
claudia kishi!!
I’ve contributed to an upcoming issue of Sketchbook…I love that illustrators are getting a bit of the spotlight on the blog scene as well as photographers (no bitterness intended, hehe)
S’funny you shld be talking about sketching. We’ve all been drawing our outfits this weekend. LLGxx
I hope it looks as great in person as it does on screen. Fantastic illustration of you. =D
Fff
Darnit, that’s exactly the type of thing I want to be drawing for.
Looks good though.. I guess I’ll have to swallow my feelings of thwarted wrong-place-wrong-time and see about buying an issue.
ooh, looks brilliant. Love the illustration, and must get it when it’s out.
xx-LJ from SOS!
looks like its going to be a great magazine. love the illustration of you
Hope it passes the sniff test. I love the fact that is using illustration more than photography.
it looks swell 🙂 and the illustration of you is gorgeous.
please continue to blog on, we love you xx
Hihi, Claudia Kishi! The best part of those books, where the descriptions of what she and Stacey Mcgill wear!
That decadent collar you are wearing makes you look like a queen lol. I mean that in a good way! Very regal. Perhaps because you are – dare i say it – queen of the fashion blogging world? I know you are too modest to accept such a label, but I’d say that you are!
Hi Susie,
Thanks for mentioning our magazine in your blog and for taking part in it. It’s an honour to be on your page, we’re big fans of your work. Our magazine is in its final layout stages and will be launched in a few weeks time. We have over 150 people involved in the first issue and we are proud to have created a publication that celebrates young emerging talents in design, photography, illustration and culture! It’s a real labour of love! We have many more exciting features in our first issue! Will keep you updated xx BLOG ON!

Fabulous cover! Love your quote 🙂

Love it!

You look amazing on the cover, i do love the style and your hair is looking very wintour-esque (but i rather like it). I like the thought of a fashion/illustration magazine, hope I can get my mucky hands on it at some point. x
“Not another blogger”, we’ve all got to start somewhere. and that statement makes all us newcomers feel a little bit silly.
I love that sketch of you, very pretty. Bloggers rule nowadays, no matter what people say… ^_^

this is amazing!
Alice: I didn’t mean for that statement to make you or any other newcomer feel silly… it’s definitely not my sentiment but recently I’ve just felt that there has been a lot of blogger press… Actually I guess I should retract that statement to “Not THAT bloody blogger again…” It really wasn’t intended to dismiss new bloggers…
That’s awesome!! Congrats Susie 🙂
Susie, my apologies for gin-soaked unthoughtful comments on your post last night. It’s really wonderful everything that you’ve achieved and there’ll always be a newcomer stigma, regardless of the industry – it’s more of a fact of life.
I still think you’re fantastic.
I absolutely adore that drawing of you, Susie! You are so beautiful, I really admire you.
Hey, you’re a paper-sniffer too? Hahaha I now love you more than I already do :p
