Oh Chéri!

>> What are long haul flights good for other than itty bitty tubes of toothpaste and different shades of flight socks?  Catching up on the cack movies that you wouldn't pay ¬£10 for (yes, it is THAT expensive to watch films in London…) nor would you think to download it online because that still requires an iota of effort.

Ch√©ri is one of those fluffy films that I watched on the way over to Philadelphia, whilst trying to digest whatever kind of mystery meat pasta the airline had just fed me.  Based on the novel by scandalous Parisian writer Colette, Stephen Frears has done his rompy period thing AGAIN laden with oh-so-witty (but not really…) one-liners with a stellar cast mostly used and abused by the odd scripting of this film and the less-than-subtle acting.  Still, in my post-gluttony of airplane food and hazy sleepy demeanour, even though Ch√©ri is most definitely not a Frears best and at times, unintentionally clunky and funny… the beautiful cinematography, sets and costumes were a visual feast that is worth watching IF it's on your flight path.  Actually, watching it without the 'headsets' (why do airlines call them that when they're basically cheapie headphones…) was a far better experience and the pastel colours and sweeping curves of the Belle Epoque era depicted have thus been ingrained in my head ever since.  It wasn't so much the style of dress (though costume designer Consolata Boyle did a fantastic job – the costumes were displayed at the Cin√© Lumi√®re in London for a while in May) that was appealing but the painterly mood and a dusky yet rich palette that is making me drawn to anything that features pale lilac, duck egg blue, pistachio green, light peach and emerald green with sumptuous and tactile fabrics being an added bonus…

  1. Such beautiful costumes on Michelle! I love all of the colors within these sets. Thanks for sharing!

  2. he he, i hate long haul flights… I once sat through Happy Go Lucky on one, and let me tell you I was not very happy, nor go lucky, afterwards! But what can you do, you have to watch something! If I’m lucky maybe they’ll have Cherie onboard my next long haul adventure.

  3. A resume serves as a tool to interest prospective employers in offering you an interview. It summarizes your work history (both paid and unpaid), relevant academic experiences, skills, and accomplishments in a concise and readable format. It also clearly demonstrates your ability to produce results in areas of interest to potential employers. Remember, a resume is a personal statement and should reflect your own style. There is no single “correct” formula for writing a resume. What is important is that your resume presents a positive image of you to the employer.

  4. what beautiful imagery… i had dangerous liasions in my queue, but i may try to find this one too… so many movies to watch!

  5. This has hit perfectly on my themes and colours for next season. How beautiful. Majestic wonder.

  6. Oh, this movie upset me so much! The book is so awesome, and then the film starts with a little montage explaining what the Belle Epoque was and ends with the denouement of the second book hastily tacked onto it… bleurgh. The costumes were kind of cool though. Especially the raddled old ex-courtesans.

  7. i saw this in theaters here in Baltimore. the scenes were so lavish and amazing. everrryy inch of the shot (that outdoor garden/terrace scene?) is just packed with gorgeousness. cute boy too.

  8. I’ve been meaning to see this movie. It looks like a confectionary delight, if not substantively worth it… Love the hats… Poor Michelle Pfeiffer. She needs more juicy roles!

  9. I LOVE these photos.
Also, I made a fashion illustration of you that I posted today on my blog. I hope that you will stop by and look at it (lizblair.blogspot.com)

  10. oh, if nothing else, the colours, the textures, the cinematography !… are a thing of beauty.
i had a similar reaction to ‘bright star’ last night, though the costumes were far less delectable. still, fanny brawne’s collars and pleats were kind of a big deal.

  11. This looks absolutely stunning! I am looking forward to watching it, if not for the movie itself, for its beautiful sets/costumes/colours…

  13. That conservatory scene reminds me of a book I had as a child. I desperately want to find it again. It was a Victorian house, with a room per page and you had lovely cut out people to place in the rooms. If anyone has any ideas what the name of the book is please do let me know.

  14. I love your post! It reminds me of the time when I was a writer for resume writing company. In addition to professional resume and CV assistance, our company provides any type of writing help. I think you could be a great writer 😉
