Sheer Delight

>> I'm going to apologise for the next few posts being "I bought this… blah blah blah…" but given that London's sample sales have rolled in all at once it seems into a chunky cheque fest (the only time my dusty cheque book comes out…) where I splurge everything on, seeing as January sales are still going to be heftily priced for me.  So I'm having to theme my purchases somewhat to eradicate that random "Hey I bought this…" feeling.

It seems somewhat odd that a post entitled "Sheer Delight" isnt' in existence on the blog as these two purchases attest, even my friend remarked that I was building up a bit of a collection of sheer bits and pieces.  Actually this weekend, as I got ermm…filing cabinets… to replace my drawers (don't ask… it's a budget thing…), I did gather up all my sheer pieces and pile them up in the light to see the colours of the sheer chiffons, mesh, silk and netting running into each other.  Two more pieces courtesy of two esteeemed designers are definitely going to augment the pile greatly.

So first up the eagerly-awaited Christopher Kane sale.  A colleague of mine wisely suggested we turn up earlier than the 5pm start time on Thursday.  Smart thinking seeing as a queue of about 20 had already formed and by the time 5pm did roll around, there were a good 100 people behind us all freezing our cheeks off.  After an agonising one-in-one-out-esque door policy, we were in and got to peek at the Gentleman of Bacongo exhibition at the Newcastle Project Gallery before finding ourselves faced with about three rails of clothing.  It was a very select sample sale and it was definitely a case of waiting by the rails to see what would come back from the changing rooms as they weren't going to be replenished by the Christopher Kane peeps.  I rather feared there would be nothing left to do a whole day of Friday sales so I'm curious as to whether people went on Friday and whether the rails still had anything left.  I was pretty direct with my choice and though  I did momentarily toy with some A/W 08 pailettes, in the end I went for something not very obvious with this panelled, sheer ode-to-ice-cream number…

… that happened to catch the sunrays in the bedroom…

The next bit of sheer came courtesy of Emma Cook, and fortunately, it was THAT mesmerising print of A/W 08-9… the one that I'd like to trace onto paper just for fun (that's my Sunday indoor activity sorted then…).  Hopefully some of you made it to the sale where it was bustling on the opening night on Friday and Emma and her team were warding off potential thiefs (they don't just smash and grab stores on Bond Street now… they're targeting sample sales too!) and racks were thankfully plentiful.

  1. the emma cook piece reminds me of my gran’s wallpaper- nicknamed the snake wall- like a snakeskin/paisley hybrid which isnt as completely wrong and creepy as it sounds.
anyway, i love it and the longer length. particularly enjoying the sleeves. x

  2. Where’d you bought those Emma Cook blouses? They’re amazing!!! PS. Your blog is such an inspiration! Thanks a lot.

  3. I checked in at the C Kane sample sale at 5.30, took one look at the queue and turned tail. It’s not that worth it. I think i’ve had enough of scrum sample sales for a life time. Thankfully, the Nicholas Kirkwood sample sale was exactly the opposite, organised, calm and full of bargains!

  4. I got to the Christopher Kane sale and all that was left were some corset crop tops, some very very expensive sequinned pieces, arm warmers and a whole load of printed Ts.
    Ho hum…
I did manage to find a lovely YSL piece at a charity shop the next day which more than made up for it. Kicking my shoddily clad feet for not making the Kirkwood sale though.

  5. Every time I see you wearing pretty sheers I think to myself “ooh I need me some of that” but I’m yet to find any pretty (affordable) bits to add to my wardrobe! I was desperate to get to the Cook sale but I had to work, not that I have any money anyway..

  6. I was too lazy to haul myself out into the cold, but seeing your sheer delights makes me slightly envious… Especially the Emma Cook. Nice picks!

  7. The sheer pieces are so lovely, and who better for sheer than the queen of layering? I think that I might have trouble deciding what to wear it with, but I still really love it.

  8. I used to love stalking the sample sales about a 15 years ago…now I don’t bother. I guess eBay has taken over for me.

  9. i also went to the chris kane sample sale. got there at about 7 pm and was a little disappointed to see that there really wasn’t much more than the 3 rails you mentioned above. i really like how you’ve styled his dress! where’s the salmon coloured bra from? all in all, great purchases! xx

  10. The Emma Cook piece is just gorgeous. You are so lucky to live in a city where there are sample sales–I live in the “other” London (London,Ontario,Canada), and we have no such thing…sigh

  11. the ‘kaners’ clearly weren’t that enthusiastc about selling – what with starting with only a few rails – and then finding that at 4ish on the friday [i did casually try to find it earlier in the day but was somewhat put off by the rather subtle – locked – entrance]… they were swiftly packing away the two remaining rails and a couple of animal print tees. all a bit dissapointing. but your emma cook shirt looks gorgeous.
