St._Basil's_Cathedral_and_Kremlin_Moscow_Russia

>> After much grappling with the Russian embassy, I'm finally all set to travel out to Moscow this Saturday for the Cycles and Seasons event, which I gather is one of Moscow's multiple fashion weeks.  I vaguely gather that it's the 'cool' one but that's only through heresay.  I can't seem to grasp anything from a website which is blank.  Is there a subtext behind that?  Cycles and Seasons – so effing cool it doesn't even need text and images on their webpage?  We'll see about that.

What I do know is that my schedule is bonkers empty.  I have one show to attend each night and I'm there until the 26th so there's a hell of a lot of hours to fill up.  I'm already stocking up on guide books because I'm a travel geek like that.  Here's a travel plea to anyone who has any info nuggets to hand out.  Shops?  Galleries?  Exhibitions?  Happenings?  Museums?  Restaurants?  Cafes?  Strange oddities that I need to check out?  Thus far, I only know that I need to walk around the beautiful metro system in Moscow but even that can only take up so much of my time so please, as much info as possible!

My only vaguely saving grace is that there'll be some familiar faces out there too with designer Vika Gazinskaya showing her next collection which I'm looking forward to.  Declan Chan, my chum from Lane Crawford will also be out there too.  By the by, and yes this is a plug on behalf of a chum but I don't care because it induces so much happiness – I hope most of you have taken four minutes of your time to check out this video supported by Lane Crawford and Models.com featuring smiley girls of A/W 11-12 lip-synching to "Can't Take My Eyes Off Of You" filmed by Justin Wu.  I had it on loop for at least five times.

**EDIT** Alright, I found the PROPER Cycles and Seasons website sponsored by Mastercard… all in Russian though but the gist of it is looking promising!

  1. I got back this morning from Moscow (Mango flew me out for a fashion show). Do go to the Kremlin museum just to see the 18&19th century coronation robes – a must for costume lovers like you & me.
Wear Heat Tech: all these Russian readers kept telling me it wasn’t cold & I nearly didn’t pack cold weather kit. Well, it not be cold if you are used to -20C but it felt DAMN cold to me! (Super wind chill, so pack hard core face cream.)
    Dasha Zhukova’s gallery.
Red Square at night as well as by day (but not on yr own_
GUM to admire the architecture, if not to shop (global brands)
Cafe Pushkin at any hour http://www.libertylondongirl.com/2011/03/15/moscow-restaurant-cafe-pushkin/
I was only there for 2 nights so that’s my limit!
    Bon voyage LLGxx

  2. hmm ive been looking for stockists of Vika Gazinskaya online/internationally in boutiques – anyone know where she’s stocked since her website doesnt appear to be much help?

  3. Pushkin museum with all its impressionists collections! Best if you go around with a person from Moscow – only this way you’ll get closer to learning about true face of Russia (read ‘Moscow’, cause it’s like a separate state in this huge country).

  4. Hi! I’m from Moscow, and I’ll be glad to help you. I even can accompany you, if you need it.
You can visit traditional sights: Red Square, Arbat street, Tverskaya street, different museums (Historical, Mayakovskiy, Pushkin, ect.) and art-galleries (Tretyakov, for example). Or you can see some new places (Garage, Winzavod, night clubs). What do you like more? Ask me, and I’ll try to give you good advice.

  5. Susie your blog is awesome I love it and read it all the time! You ask about Moscow so my advice to visit few café-restaurant:
    1. “Solianka” http://s-11.ru/english I love interior, people and food there, also there you can visit good shop “Twins shop”
    2. ‚ÄúStrelka” http://www.barstrelka.com/ it’s fashionable place and the best place in moscow. 3.”Simachev Bar”-also cool place, location- 12 bldg 2, Stoleshnikov pereulok.
    4. And my favorite one is ” Lu—Åh” http://www.luchbar.ru/
By the way Pushkin is the best luxury russian restaraun, you have to visit it! So about shopping, you can visit ”Kuznetsky most 20” http://www.kuznetskymost20.ru/ And ”Mood Swings” http://www.moodswings.ru on Nikitskiy bulvar 17. Next to it Uk Style and Traffic.
I hope you would like Moscow in spite of the weather! Wish you good trip and interesting fashion shows!

  7. I know of a couple ways to use up hours in Moscow, but I’m not so certain you’d share the same enthusiasm… it is however a very good sight seeing exercise… ahem.

  8. Leather sandals in snow susie… just what you need, you can thank Emmanuel after.

  9. Lucky you! I haven’t been to Moscow (yet!) but have travelled solo to other parts of Russia. When I first went I felt a bit culture shocked because all the signage was in Cyrillic. Moscow probably has English signage in the tourist areas, but I’d recommend learning to read basic words like ‘toilet’ and ‘exit’ in Russian.

  10. Must-visit places in Moscow (despite the sings u’ll find in travel guide):
    1. Garage Centre for Contemporary Culture (http://garageccc.com/eng)- the best place for contemporary art and events
    Shopping:
    1. Leform (http://www.leform.ru/index.php) – the one on Dmitrovsky per.
    2. Kuznetsky most 20
    3. Mood Swing Department Store
    4. Tsvetnoy
    Restaurants:
    1. Coffeemania (http://www.coffeemania.ru/) on Bolshaya Nikitskay street. working 24h per day
    2. MariVanna – on Spiridonyevsky pereulok 10A
    3. Kavkazskay Plennica (http://eng.novikovgroup.ru/content/view/4/12/lang,russian/) – very authentic south russian food. You shoul try
It is not all! But really must see. In one of the comments is really essensial list and very good! These ones could be added there.

  11. I can’t believe nobody mentioned the house of Gorki yet! If you like art nuveau stlyle this is one of the best examples and certainly the most beautiful building of Moscow!
    http://www.tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g298484-d302513-Reviews-Gorky_s_House_Ryabushinsky_Mansion-Moscow_Central_Russia.html#
On the Tverskaya street ( you won’t miss it) visit the most beautiful store in the world: http://eliseevskiy.ru/e_about.htm
    Novodevichii!!! http://www.flickr.com/photos/en_foque/2808850492/
Amazing convent with the famous graves behind. Eltsin, Gogol, Chechov and many others are burried there.
And if you will visit the Red Square and Kremlin try to aslo visit the diamond museum: http://almazi.net/index.php?page=index&lang=eng
And the last must is a surreal visit to the mausoleum of Lenin. But make sure you come there on time and on the right day. I don’t remember when exactly it’s open.
How long will you sty there? Because if you have plenty of time there are few nice parks just ouside the centre with historical buildings and amazing views.
If you need more info, I am happy to help out. Just let me know!

  12. There’s lovely Prechistenka street, and the best looking little gas station near Pushkin Mueseum, across the street from Christ the saviour.
Garage (Dasha Joukova’s gallery, already mentioned above)
the pretty pretty churches and mansions on the south side of the river, on Ordynka and Piatnitskaya. Novdievitchy also.
Also, you absolutely need to go to (at least part of) an evening orthodox service. Sretinsky Monastery (near Chistye prudy) is a good one.
Not far, the Sandouny baths, also a must (although very little clothing to be seen inside).
Solianka, the club, the street and the neighbourhood is also excellent.
restaurants : the top of the swiss hotel; much better yet, the top of the Russian Academy of sciences (think it’s called the skybar).
The clubs and restaurants at REd October (former chocolate factory on the island) are ok.
For clothes, i most strongly advise a trip to the Isma√Ølovo flea market, on saturdays and sundays. Old Ladies selling old dresses, wonderful 60’s and 70’s soviet prints. flowers, geometrical designs. All for a song.

  13. We found a fantastic menswear shop in Moscow, but for the life of me I cannot remember what it is called. I’m a girl, and I seriously wanted to buy heaps of the stuff in there. I can’t find it in googlemaps, but its near the Chocolate Hostel, in a sort of courtyard area with offices, just off Tverskaya st. Does anyone know what I’m talking about? I have been trying to remember the name of the store since I was there a year ago. Would love to find if they have a website.

  14. wow, you are so lucky. russia is definitely one of my top travel destinations, but i hear it’s very hard to get a tourist visa even! how did you manage with getting yours? just time consuming, or is there a lot of horrible paperwork involved??
