>> I may be flying over to Sydney on the 29th April, known henceforth as the BIG DAY (woe upon those that are getting married that day…), but I'm not, however going to pretend to be an indifferent snob about it all. There's a mild pressure amongst creative/vaguely left wing circles to say "Oh the Royal Wedding is so NAFF!" that you could be so easily peer-pressured in to saying so. It's not naff. It's just a wedding between two people I personally have no interest in. I do however have a mild interest in the external elements… such as the menu they have (a cracking Great British Menu series could have been produced for the occasion… GBM is my guilty addiction I might add…), the dress she wears and the general festivities of the country at large because, I've personally never witnessed such a national-binding occasion like this EVER. I'm not partaking in the physical festivities but I'm not going to give looks of disdain to those that do. It's given a lot of people in the UK what works out as pretty much a solid 11 day holiday and that's cause enough for celebration.
With that in mind, I give you my only vaguely Royal Wedding-related post. I'm pointing out the obvious here but I do think it's nice to round up the merchandise that isn't disgusting tat because there is a shit ton of disgusting tat that has descended upon the world. Sure it's all still opportunistic but I'm slightly appreciative of the sentiment.. or at the very least, the ounce of wit that's in these products.
Anya Hindmarch's Royal Wedding Kit has just landed on my door complete with a wavable flag, a temporary tattoo and a box of confetti. "Line the Streets" says Anya in anticipation for the many street parties that will be taking place on the day. Again, who can complain about that? Mountains of cake, sarnies and pop… go out and enjoy all of that and just skip out when it comes to gluing your eyes on the telly for the pomp and ceremony of everything going on in Westminister. Once again, Hindmarch has a sell-out on her hands as it's not available on the website anymore, proof that the enthusiasts are out in force. To be cliched and totally uncool about it… if you can't beat em', join em'…
House of Holland has also gotten in on the action. I'm pondering the sentiment. Question is, do I ACTUALLY want to feel like the queen…? I would very much like to get into her wardrobe mindset once in a while though… "Hmmm… aquamarine two-piece suit or dusty lilac twinset?" Ta very much…
Or you could still go for disdain and indifference with this mug here that I think is potent not just in its slogan design but also because the production of it points out the ridiculous situation whereby the official commerorative ceramics and tableware of the wedding are being produced not in Great Britain, but in China. The designer of this 'Sorry but…' mug, Camila Prada may still be deemed as opportunistic in the inception of her anti-establishment design but the underlying sentiment regarding the mug's Staffordshire origins in contrast to that of the official ceramics ware, is definitely a winner for me. In any case, it is clear she isn't against the union of these two people but rather the media hoopla that surrounds it. Plus, I always welcome any use of the 'Keep Calm and Carry On' font…
Nice Post!!! lovely

Bahahaha! I think I want that mug (even though I totally care more than any American should . . . what can I say, Kate Middleton just has a warm smile). I was waiting for one of my favorite UK bloggers to do a post about Royal wedding stuff . . .
Hahaha it’s a double celebration for me, their Royal wedding falls on my 29th birthday. I got given a limited edition tea set and Earl Grey Tea to commemorate their wedding….not sure what i’d be doing on that day. If I had known the date were coming closer to the big day I would’ve booked a mini break elsewhere outside the UK (take the tea set with me) and drink tea peacefully and wear my Shanghai Tang qipao outfit in a chic way hahahaha.
P.s slightly tipsy after drinking 5 cups of Whisky tea.
Haha! I love that mug! There has been so much wedding mania over here and in St. Andrews too, but I haven’t really been able to get too into it. I thought at first it might be because I am American living abroad and I just don’t “get” it, but a lot of my friends at home are going absolutely nuts about the wedding, so perhaps I’m just not an uber romantic type–haha!
I must be the only gay guy who is jealous of Kate (I’ve always had a crush on Wills). They are a lovely couple, however. But I’m really more jealous of the British Consulate taking that holiday off here in L.A. I’ll have one “Sorry, but…” mug please.
Funny post!

Ha ha, awesome post! I feel the same, don’t really care about the wedding, but will definitely enjoy all the ‘pomp’ (love that word) and don’t begrudge any Royalists their fun…

loved the shirt and the lines on it =] no need of a prince ^^
i was waiting for one of my favourite British bloggers to talk about the wedding. i feel exactly the same: there’s this immense pressure to be all “i hate it”, just because “i’m cool and fashionable”. don’t like that…
i feel sad for them for not having the perks of a “normal” wedding, without all the limelight and fuss. but hey, comes with the job, what can i say. and being a brazilian i might understand it completely wrong but i do love this “british traditions” feeling that this wedding represents.
i’m also assuming that with the economic reports saying this week alone will pump almost a 0.2% increase in the year’s economy, i wouldn’t complain. with the crisis and all, it’s a good way for the royals to help: marry and inject some tourism/money.
all in all, it’s like you said. two people getting married. cheers for them and let’s hope they’re happy. and let’s all party! nothing like a party all over the world to give a jolt of good vibrations, with all these lybias/afghanistans/sudans/cote d’ivoires all over the news…
ha, love the mug. need one. because it’s exactly what i’ve been thinking since the engagement was announced.

There’s a lot of tat out there, but… it is good for the economy. My local charity shop is selling bunting that’s been sewn from old clothing by volunteers, which is quite sweet.
haha 🙂 Great idea.
I think idea about the royal wedding is a bit too much media focused. What about world hunger and so on! Thnks for make me laugh about this oveexhaurated event.
I am not sure if I feel so bad about the wedding… it’s a fresh young wind through the royal family I think… but hey, that’s just my opinion.

it’s surreal when you’re American and you could care less about any sort of royal wedding but you know girls here in Seattle following it religiously.
One thing I like about your site? You know when to go against the flow and kick a**.. Love the mug, btw.. and the shirt.. <3

So pleased to hear you’re coming back for RAFW. Here’s hoping I bump into you!
I just hope this mug can be purchased online, i really want to have one.
Aja: You’re totally allowed to care. Just don’t be wearing a glittery tee that says “Kate and Wills 4 Eva”….
Kit: Birthday over wedding I say…. you can still get away….!
Susie: Oh my lord…. St Andrews… I can’t imagine… that sort of excitement might irk me a bit… I can imagine lots of people going mad over the fact that they met at uni…
Arturo: I really think it should have been an honorary holiday for the whole of the British Commonwealth… technically USA was once part of UK… well, a long time ago… but hey, a public holiday for all, I say!
Carol: You’re completely right and yes, it does rile up a certain sense of ‘British pride’ in some people which isn’t a bad thing seeing as we go about 99% of the time feeling apologetic/ashamed about being a shuffling Brit…
Northwest is Best: That sounds lovely….!
Frances: I do find it odd how people from outside of the UK have gotten so excited about it… I feel like they somehow need to be honoured with a public holiday just for putting in the effort….!
Anna: Auva: Yup, you can buy it from the sorrybut.co.uk website….
omg! i want that mug!!!!! i care more about that coffee mug than the wedding. 😉
I’m with you on this one honey :3 I’m sick of being force-fed a wedding, hell I’m in S-Korea and I still hear no end of the bloody thing – one Couldn’t care less mug please! <3
I like this post. I also love Keep Calm and Carry On. I like a lot of Kate’s outfits and look forward to seeing the dress. I love all the rustic vintage britian decorations that are about because of it though, and I wish I was going to a street party!
