Colour Me Happy in Sydney

"You have such a way with colour" may not sound like the highest compliment that one could pay to a designer but sometimes it boils down to the simplest of things that makes a collection tick for me.  Jade Sarita Arnott of Arnsdorf has pared it down considerably for her latest S/S 12 collection in silhouette but it was in the colour choices that maximal impact was made.  A choice of mint green with a flash of hot pink and touches of orange and floods of white has no exacting science to it but somehow seems a whole lot more relevant in the context of sun-seeking Australia.

I've been watching the Weather Channel here and their fear of lack of sun is felt most accutely.  Even news of a slightly overcast day is doled out with overly apologetic notes.  In typically British fashion, weather invariably crops up and nearly every Australian has equally been unnecessarily mournful about the weather – "Oh we're so bummed the weather isn't going to be good for you!"  By not good, they mean temperatures hovering around 20 degrees celcius and slightly overcast skies.  I'd like to say that I didn't fly all the way down to Oz for hot weather.

My point is that Arnsdorf has probably taken advantage of all this sun searching, exploiting the sort of clear blue skies that shines a most beautiful light on the shades of mint green, hot pink and of course pure uncompromising white.  There was such a lovely ease about it all, especially when complete with flat sandals and compact clutches and mini-bags.  Even in the one instance of navy/black in a sleek jumpsuit, there was a lightness about it.  Buzzy phrases like 'summer chic' might sound throwaway and airhead-esque but I suppose if I have to have my bit of 'summer chic', Arnsdorf's collection would be it…

I love the hues of a watered-out sunset in this sarong dress.  Actually this might be my first 'sarong'-type garment that I genuinely like.  It might be figuring out the knots and the drapes that frustrates me about it… but in any case, both Jade and Stevie Dance (of Russh Magazine who styled the show) got it spot on here…

Karla Spetic's S/S 12 collection was a bolder bolst of colour relying less on texture and more on pure colour blocking.  She falls back on a previously explored combination of purple/pink and orange but also introduces Starburst lime green in a suit that is one of those things that I'd try but perhaps not dare to wear.  I suppose that's saying a lot that I wouldn't dare wear something.  The double thigh high split has been quite rampant at RAFW and I actually don't mind the lingering note of Christopher Kane's S/S 10 collection, seeing as I do think it makes sense in a place where baring-skin is par for course.  I also like the skin revelation through the fleur-de-lis derived cut-outs in Spetic's dresses…

  1. The pink/fuschia/magenta trench at Arnsdorf was my favourite! The colour, the offset buttons causing it to drape = brilliant!
    xx

  2. Welcome back to Sydney, Susie. The Dreamery loved the riot of colour shown at both Arnsdorf and Karla Spetic – you really are spot on about this Arnsdorf collection being so much more suited to our Australian life. And for those who loved these shows and want to have their say, The Dreamery will be polling favourite styles, colourways and accessories so that fans and followers can tell us what they want to see in-store come summer.

  3. What gorgeous clothing! I’d love to add quite a bit of it to my personal collection…

  4. That fuchsia jacket is the bomb! And the black jumpsuit. And the pink paired with orange pants: my favourite colour combo of the season is coral and hot pink. At a time when colour is so prevalent I’d say telling a designer they’re good with colour is a huge compliment!

  5. I see what you mean about the way with the colours and simple shapes, but I have to say I know of a couple of girls who could pull off that lime green suit…and one of them is you!
    xx
