You Stole Nothing

>> Some of you might already know from Twitter/Facebook that on Friday night, my flat was broken into and burgled by one or more bastard beast.  I haven't totted up all the losses but the main thing is that all of our DSLR/point and shoot cameras have been taken which means that I'll be struggling to blog for a bit and I've had to cancel trips/work etc because I'm camera-less.

I've been boo-hoo-ing about it all day yesterday, obsessing about whether CCTV will be able to catch the thieves, but today I've chinned up.  Fuck flash DLSRs.  I've found an old pack of Polaroid 600 film to use in the old camera that was a fiver from eBay.  WOOP.  Therefore, it's a case of Something Old, Something New, where I have dug out an old fave in the form of the I Heart Norwegian Wood custom-made dress and taken some new lace-edged shorts by Meadham Kirchhoff from the sample sale on Friday, to try to piece together a post-burglary happiness-inducing jigsaw puzzle .  Afterall, since I'll be unable to put out anything worthy or informative here for at least a few days, the best I can do is pony up some Polaroids that mildly cheer me up with a modicum of hope.  That's the pack gone.  I think I'll create some supremely awesome illustrations with Paint on Windows.  Or I'll sketch.  Or I'll go to Jessops and angrily fork out £2k for another camera and growl to myself on the bus ride home and then promptly get mugged.

I think I just went back to boo-hoo-ing again.  I'll stop this maddening cycle.  Chin is up.

  1. The polaroids are stunning, of course! Full of a wonderfully creative and retro-y feeling. But I’m still very upset about what happend to you πŸ™ I remember when I loaned my laptop (stupid!) to someone and their house got robbed. I still feel like boo-hoo-ing when I remember . . So, and I’m sure I’m speaking for all your readers, we’re here for you!

  2. Well done for keeping your chin up in the face of horrible events. Maybe have a DSLR fundraising jumble sale? Love the polaroids! x

  3. I was so sorry to read you’d had your home burgled. Our home has been robbed twice; almost exactly six months apart, probably by the same thief (thieves?) looking to nab the insurance replacements. Amongst the typical valuables that were stolen we also lost some family heirloom jewellery which can never be replaced.
The worst part though was how violating it feels – knowing a stranger has touched your things without permission – rifled through your underwear and all the things you hold dear. So boo-hoo all you like; you’re more than entitled.

  4. Stunning photos Susie. You have taken a terrible situation and made beauty from it! I truly hope that everything works out for you both and you are able to get another camera and get back to your usual blogging/work/travel!

  5. Oh Susie, I am so sorry. Fucking nightmare. Let me know if you want me to hook you up with the Canon PR, as I believe they have a press reduction available in equipment.Love LLGxx

  6. I love the second one!!
Check out my new outfit post!

  7. So sorry to hear the loss of the cameras (I gutted about Shini’s old cam w/Sigma lens…that was a pretty darn good lens).
Yay for the Polaroid!!! You won’t be able to find them anywhere now unless you trawl on ebay for £30-60 a pack :S or fork out £22 for a pack of 8 from The Impossible Project.
DON’T GO TO JESSOPS!!!!! They will totally rip you off!!!!!! I either I go to Jacobs digital opp Jessops on New Oxford St or Calumet on Wardour St.
    Hugs! xxxxx

  8. Oh god, I heard about your ordeal on twitter. It must be awful- I constantly obsess over locked windows and doors. I was burgled once when I was younger, and the main thing which saddened me is they took our vcr and disney sing-along vhs’s. I was about 7… Sad times. But honestly, what sort of monster does that?! They’d get 50p max at a car boot sale. However, I have to admit that the cameras are worse than my videos.

  9. I saw your tweet yesterday – gutted for you. Whilst I was at uni we caught burglars in our house – nothing was taken, but the feeling of violation is the most sickening part.
You as a person, and as a blogger, have lost nothing, as you have been creative in adversity and have produced a visually stunning post with the means available to you.
Big love, and forget the temporary ‘chin up’ – hold your head high, always.
    Charlotte xx

  10. Ohh really sad to hear about this! But it is so admirable that you’re still posting, I really hope things sort out soon!xx When my student house was robbed they stole my Blythe doll, wtf!

  11. I’m so sorry about this Susie. I live with my boyfriend and our house got broken into last April… we lost cameras, videogames, computers… so much stuff. It feels violating and really maddening that someone would do this. Hope the insurance helps, though. We’re still fighting with ours.

  12. What an awful nightmare, however on the bright side as long as you and Steve are safe…that’s all that matters! I am in LOOOOOOOOVE with those Meadham Kirchhoff shorts they are beautiful! Chin up and smile!xoxo

  13. It’s just a minor set back in the scheme of things, but it should’nt dampen your enthusiasm, and that’s the most important part and NO ONE can take that away from YOU… that’s why I keep returning to the Bubble World!;)

  14. I am so sorry to hear what happened, but as the creative person you are, you have continue your path using different tools. You have grown inside, my dear Susie and have given us a fantastic post and an example.

  15. I’m all for the jumble sale idea! But it sucks. It really sucks having your stuff stolen. Last week on a trip to San Francisco all my money mysteriously disappeared from my wallet in a setting where there were lots of friends of friends milling about. It makes me crazy to think that could have happened! Chin up indeed.

  16. It’s horrible how people can be so heartless. I’ve been a victim of a stick up and it was the most devastating of events. Keep your head up and know that karma will bite them in the arse 10X harder. We’re all glad that you are okay!!
    XOXO

  17. So sorry to hear about the burglary, what utter utter bastards. I do hope nothing that can’t be replaced was taken. best wishes Mo x

  18. This is horrible! I hope you will find the bastards and could retrieve your cameras back! The outfit shots though with the polaroid camera is great!

  19. oh susie, i really feel for you. but if it’s any consolation, what you have done with these polaroids is pretty amazing. hope they get caught & you get your cameras back….stranger things have happened.

  20. You look MAHVELOUS. u r right they r bastard beasts. Cry when it comes, smile when you can. They can never rob you of your beautiful spirit and creativity…hugs….

  21. Good thing they didn’t steal your computer! It seems like they saw all those photo sessions on your balcony πŸ™
    Hope you get it back!
    x

  22. Oh my gosh, freaking bastards indeed!! I’m so sorry, it’s so unfortunate and unlucky…but your attitude towards it is very impressive. πŸ™‚ I think I’d be raging and moaning for….ever, basically, haha. Good for you. πŸ™‚
    Cecilia

  23. Oh Gosh Susie, I’m really sincerely sorry for you.
I hope they’ll catch the bastards and that you’ll manage to get back your stuff soon (at least the ones that allow you to work and that are causing you the most trouble)
It’s amazing how you found the strength to blog with an old polaroid in a situation like this, you must love it so much… You rock

  24. So sorry to hear about your burglary.I wish there was something I could do to help? I can’t tell you how much enjoyment your blogs and photos give me every day. Out in LA and I’m always homesick for the places I can’t be. London is one of them, but you take the edge off the homesickness.
I absolutely feel for you, but, on the other hand, the polaroids have a certain Quixotic air which I very much enjoyed. So, not the total loss you think. Brava to a girl who makes the best of a rotton situation!

  25. i’m so sorry. that is awful. b u t these photos are awesome and maybe it will induce some creativity πŸ™‚

  26. Awww, damn! I’m so sorry to hear you’ve been burgled. It’s a sick feeling to know someone has invaded your sanctuary for the sole purpose of taking what is rightfully yours and it’ll take awhile to feel safe again. When I was burgled, I was really thankful they only took the small amount of cash and jewellery we had around the apartment, and not any of our tech stuff.
And good on you for keeping your chin up! These Polaroids lend an awesome vintage feel, so maybe it’s not all bad that you got to use them.

  27. And there was me feeling hard done by because I couldn’t get to the Meadham Kirchhoff sample sale on Friday….stupid burglars…that sucks, I’m sorry Susie. :-/

  28. I’m sorry to hear about the burlgary. Just know that you have a lot of people that are really inspired by you and your blog, and I love the title. In the scheme of things, it is all material anyway. Of course it sucks to lose something valuable, but keep your chin up. I’m glad at least you were not harmed, and you still have your family and friends. Don’t be too anxious about blogging everyday..The blogging/fashion world can wait. I know if I was an online public figure, the last thing I would want to worry about is if I made another outfit post, even if it was something I was indeed passionate about. We’ll wait for you Susie Bubble, you rule!

  29. Susie:
I am so sorry to hear about the break-in, but am glad both of you are safe. I understand the emotional upheaval over the loss of your cameras (I would feel the same way), but you’ve
demonstrated by this post that while the thieves took your stuff, they couldn’t steal your spirit or creativity! Cool Polaroids and outfits. Hope the insurance steps up, and I’m sure you’ll be up and shooting in no time.

  30. Thanks for everyone’s sweet comments… you’re gonna go really mad at me but…erm… I never had my cameras insured *cowers in shame*
YES, it’s SUPER dumb! Is it pay back from the insurance higher beings?
Yesterday I just got everything insured. Too little, too late probably…

  31. So sorry to hear this. I was burgled twice at university, once while i was in the house so i was attacked as well. Thank god you weren’t in at least. Things can be replaced! Im sure your insurance will cover your cameras. Chin up, as you say, adversity brings out the best in us. X

  32. that is horrible! I cant even begin to imagine what you must feel!

  33. oh no. so sorry to hear this. it’s horrible but I’m glad to see that you’ve looked for alternatives so quickly. Kudos to your quick thinking. Most of all, at least you’re safe and now have everything insurance. I do hope you get your stuff back somehow. *hugs*

  34. Soooo sorrrrry to hear Susie!!! It’s all totally bananas and just plain madness!!! Sorry for your loses babe!!! Sending you a big huge hug! And your poloroid pics are gorgeous, keep that chin up babe!!! mwahhh

  35. can i ask how much those shorts were in the sample sale? I was going to go but didn’t know if the prices would be affordable for my budget… I never know when it comes to these designer sample sales!???!

  36. what a bunch of losers, bloody robbers:(((
    the pic’s look great
and as long as you are smiling, they haven’t got anything!!

  37. Isabelle/Ioanna: Good idea about the sale and I will do another one in August but I need to get a camera sorted this week really for work purposes…. BUMMER….
Emma: The shorts were £150 – not cheap cheap but compared to the original price, massively reduced…

  38. really sorry to hear about this. πŸ™
I hope they catch the bastards!
But your right chin up πŸ™‚

  39. I’m so sorry to hear this news!! Keep your chin up though, you’ve just proven that you are resilient in this crazy world by posting some truly amazing photos (LOVE that cage dress)! Remain hopeful that they’ll catch those losers and grateful that you are safe!!

  40. So sorry to hear about the bastard burglars, Susie – I really hope they get caught and that you never have to go through something like this again.
And you really are unstoppable, DSLR theft didn’t prevent you from outfit blogging any more than bloody knees could keep you away from the shows all those moons ago. If I was actually wearing a hat, I’d be doffing it to you right about now.

  41. So sorry to hear about this – best wishes with recovering and replacing things. Speaking as a relatively new follower, thanks so much for sharing such great content with us! Hope your chin stays up!

  42. Terrible news, Susie. Just be careful because thieves are not only cowardly, they are also lazy and creatures of habit and they are known to go back to the same place again. They know they have been successful once and are apt to try again.

  43. I am so sorry to hear that your home was burglarized. what a supreme bummer! I hope they catch the bastards. I, do, however, love your polaroid photos of your amazing outfit! You’re the shit.

  44. Oh Susie I just got back into town and read this, I’m so sorry, what a nightmare!! I’ve been robbed before too and not only is it bad to lose your stuff, but to lose the sense of security you have in your home…so horrible!!!
