Why have I been absent on the blog for more than then norm (though to be fair, I am ridiculously precious about posting everyday… whatever 'normal' levels of blogging behaviour that exist are sort of dismissed…)? I've been getting chummy with some long white poles and two men. That sounds more wrong that it actually is of course.
What/who I've actually been getting familiar with are the poles from Ikea's Stolmen wardrobe system and two men from Express Wardrobe, a company that does your flat pack assembly for you. One might call me copping out of the whole DIY spirit but if you've seen me handle an allen key or worse a power tool that might send spinning screws flying into people's eyes and that Steve is only mildly better (well, he's never poked an eye out…) then you'll get why I had to call these dudes. I'd long decided on Stolmen to replace what can only be described as a makeshift clothes sausage stuffer (shelves with clothes hanging onto it for dear life…) and for once, I actually acted out on a plan – ta da – way-hey – I'm not just a hair-brained dreamer with too many thoughts and not enough action. I spent a few hours drawing up a Stolmen plan that made me feel like I was at in the D.T. hut again and felt very accomplished ordering the exact requisite amount of shelves, poles, suspension thingies and drawers… frick, what are those suspension things called…
Friday was dubbed 'Stolmen' day and I spent the day peering into my bedroom making sure the Express Wardrobe guys didn't need an endless stream of tea to keep them going (it turns out they don't need such a trifling beverage…) and basically saying "Wow you guys WORK fast!" and them laughing uncomfortably because I was in awe of an efficient power tool. Turns out they knew the Stolmen system WELL and took my ickle plan and basically tore it apart as I had omitted details like err…skirting boards, pipes, bracket sizing and well, general Stolmen common sense. Which is why they were able to put this together…
…and I'm better off left to my DIY bimbotic ways of going "Ohhh, I can't wait to fill that up!". Pftttt…
Morplan gave me plenty of hanger options for me to do some filling and actually I might need to explore their hangers more regularly seeing as the metal sliding peg hangers, when hung on the rail make me feel like I'm going through a shop rail… which in turns gives me the feeling of shopping for something new… which also supports my whole airhead 'credit card ditz' thing that I've got going with regards to my new wardrobe system experience…
Behold… all hangers up, rails are heaving (as if they were ever going to be sparse) and there's still space left (the top shelves are meant for the boring things that need to be hidden though)! This isn't alas an excuse to just fill it up with new additions but hopefully the start of a culling system whereby I can spot things and go "Alright…offski you go…"
Colour co-ordination with printed pieces just isn't as effective as a solid colour rainbow goddamnit…
Rifling through skirts on peg hangers… more fun than rifling through err…wooden ones…
Who knows when there will need to be additional shelves for these but the beauty of the Stolmen is the addition of components… that was a spokesperson quote right there… I welcome free suspension thingies if anyone in Wembley Ikea's warehouse is listening…
There'll be over spillage and in all honesty, I do probably need a second bedroom but I'm staying put for a while (for many reasons…) and Stolmen is sorting it out for the moment… a cheer for a ton of fibre board masquerading as a wardrobe!

2015-07-13 at 12:20 PMI am looking for x 3 Stolmen shelves 110cm x 38cm – you don’t have any spares that you would be happy to sell do you? Ikea have discontinued this line.
Many thanks
Susie

2015-07-13 at 1:11 PMI think I have some of the wider ones but not the 38cm ones unfortunately! My dad did help me make a few replacements ones so maybe you could investigate a DIY option!

2010-08-22 at 1:33 AMIt’s eery how much your closet looks like mine now…except I have turquoise walls and I’m CRAZY jealous of your white poles…must be a UK thing, our only option here is silver…
Ingunn: the Stolmen system is actually QUITE affordable when you compare it to armoires or other large clothing storage systems, especially on this type of of storage needs scale…plus you can easily take it with you and re-configure it if you move…oh god now I sound like the spokesperson for this thing…

2010-08-22 at 2:17 AMi am disproportionally excited by this post! i’m also re-doing my wardrobe but I, alas, am not aloud to do install permanent wardrobe type things into my rented flat [i assume stollman requires fixing to the walls?]. however I can appreciate your rainbow colour organisation – which makes dressing so much easier, and the matching hangers which make me feel like i’m rifling through a boutique too!

you could invest in the ikea roller blinds for cover if dust is an issue. It works like a charm, is completely opaque and totally efective at keeping dust at bay. I personally know someone that has and is super pleased with the results.

2010-08-23 at 8:13 AMJealous! I wanted the Stolmen when I moved into my apartment a few months ago, but our IKEA had stopped carrying it. Oh well, I’d never keep it neat like this, I need hiding places to shove unfolded shirts that I plan to disgustingly re-wear without washing them, or you know… things that sound more normal.

2010-08-23 at 8:32 AMi’ve just moved out of my amazing london house back to the homeland (new forest) temporarily and i miss my glamorous big IKEA wardrobe with all its amazing compartments and racks and drawers…doesnt it give you the most amazing feeling to SEE everything all neat and tidy! Great yard sale, i got 3 books and a cardigan for ยฌยฃ9. Must say bravo on your extremely low prices, at one point i overheard you speaking with someone else and here’s how the conversation went:
Girl “hi how much is this dress?”
Susie “ยฌยฃ20….ohhh actually is that too much?”
Girl “er no!!!….not for a vivienne westwood dress…!!!”
welldone. Its nice to see someone being fair in such a greedy world where people practically want to make money on things they’ve bought!!!
And it was a great atmosphere – in a carpark under what looked to be converted warehouses or suchlike, bbq going, girls riffling through bags in desperation to get a piece of designer….i brought along my gorgeous Hampshire hottie of a boyfriend who stood by in awe and said ‘so this is the kinda thing girls do in London!!?’…..YES! I replied proudly….whilst riffling amongst what can only be described as a pack of hungry fashion wolves….

2011-07-11 at 9:20 PMHi Susie,
Long-term follower here! My fiance and I are buying our first little house and are going for a Stolmen as we both love our clothes (although I don’t know how we’ll share?!).
I was just wondering how you have got on with it so far as I know you got it installed a while ago now! Have you had any problems? Would you recommend it?
Any help would be much appreciated!!
Thanks so much, Georgie
susie_bubble
2011-07-11 at 9:44 PMGeorgie: Hopefully you’ll read my reply here! I’ve not had any problems at all! I’ve been really scared that the rails would start coming loose because I SERIOUSLY load them up with lots of hangers. The drawers still slide really well (a problem with Ikea furniture…dodgy slide drawer fittings…). No complaints whatsoever which is pretty amazing. I put it down to hiring people to come and install it for me. If I had done it myself, I think it would have been disastrous….
Flat Pack Bart
2015-07-16 at 6:16 AMFantastic furniture assembly! The IKEA Stoleman wardrobe system is the answer to everything one might need! I myself have built at least 20 of those in my career as a furniture assembler. People are usually quite impatient to how those new drawers filled up xoxo! Among my personal favorite IKEA flat pack assembly kits for sure. All compartments and racks and drawers are more than neat and tidy. Surely among the best flat packs if you trend to be messy. The top shelves are the perfect spot for stuff you preffer to look at rather than use ๐
once again cheers! a fantastic furniture assembly indeed
