Cake Boss

>> I am finally in the land of Cake Boss!  Well, by that, I mean I'm in USA.  Los Angeles to be specific.  I basically associate any downtime in USA, getting lost in the rabbit hole of the 100s of TV channels in my hotel room, with Cake Boss being the ultimate of indulgences.  With that in mind as well as the "More is More"/"Let them eat cake!" attitude of Sul Gi's sketches (thanks for all the support for her by the way – she is, I believe, mega chuffed!), I was quite happy to see Corey Moranis' email in my inbox.  Corey aka DJ Cosmosis, who is based in Toronto, takes cake bossing to a whole new level, as she combines rainbow food-dyed, glittered-up and psychedelic iced towering creations with fashion styling, matching up shoots to cake in amazing tandem.  For better of for worse, there is something viscerally visual about pretty cakes that people really respond to.  One of my most popular pics on my Instagram happen to be a set of black macaroons by Laduree for Reed Krakoff.  The likes of Pomp de Franc and Lily Vanilli in London have created businesses out of combining the humble cake mix with more design-led heights.  It's become a cliched trope in itself to coo/like/love/swoon at aesthetically pleasing cakes.

Therefore, I'm glad that Corey's cakes avoid the perfect pastel soft focus backgrounded genre of baked goods.  They're adorned with plastic kitsch and junky finds and match up with the print mixes which Corey has styled up on the model in a shoot photographed by Shannon Echlin.  Tartan checks, cross-stitch florals, palm prints and Mexicana are all replicated in icing on these towering cakes, topped off with toy shop tackiness, the sort that's just right up my street.  Fellow rainbow lover Fred Butler is already a fan of Corey's cake/fashion mixes.  You wonder who/what gets to dismantle and plough their way through the hunks of iced-up cake.  It's got to be a strong group effort, no?  Preferably they should eat the cake whilst wearing all the accessories featured in the shoot.

Going back to being in LA, I'd just like to point out that it is in fact my FIRST TIME EVER in Los Angeles (my surfing soujourn in Orange County didn't count as I didn't go into LA proper) and just to emphasise the point that I'm actually here, yesterday after we landed, we drove up to Deronda Drive to get this standard tourist mug shot.  I'm here to attempt to relax in addition to doing something blog-related.  An out of office holiday email bounceback has been set up.  My phone isn't always going to be on.  And I may not blog a great deal this week.  There's too much sun to take in, too many tacos joints to hit up and too many miles to drive along the Pacific Coast Highway.  Oh and I have to slowly work my way through my friend Joy Yoon's supremely useful guide, Best Things To Do in Los Angeles: 1,001 ideas.  Three down…errr… 998 to go…
