BFAing 2012

BFAing 2012

>> My stomach is swizzling and suffering for the week's worth of alcohol-induced bashing and indulgent feasting, kicked off by Tuesday's British Fashion Awards thanks to an invite from swishy destination site Luxup.  The BFA's always feels like the starting point of the Christmas run-up period of merriment and is a chance for industry folk and especially British designers to pat themselves on the back and hopefully partake in a massive self-congratulatory group hug.  It's impossible to play favourites at the British Fashion Awards as all nominees genuinely deserving.  That isn't even mild-mannered diplomacy on my part.  Take the category of Emerging Ready to Wear award for example.  The nominees were J.W. Anderson, Simone Rocha and Michael van der Ham – a powerful trio that is hard to decide between – and whilst I was wearing pretty much head to toe Simone Rocha, Anderson taking the gong was sweet enough satisfaction.  The same enough can be said for many of the other awards where you couldn't ask me to choose real discernible favourites.  Therefore, I propose a more vanilla and juvenile approach to the BFA's next year.  Every nominated designer jumps up into the air on stage, then pink and silver confetti, glitter and comes falling down in a cascade.  And then the pink foam party begins.  Everyone is covered with BFA pink foamy love.  Everyone is a winner.  And nobody makes awkward speeches or pronounciation gaffes.  Oh, and everyone should eat fondue instead of overdone steak.

I pre-empted my foam-covered, glitter bomb BFA fantasy with the outfit that I wore on the night.  Simone Rocha, whose year has been on a deservedly upward trajectory, was who I was keen on wearing with quiet textures that speak volumes.  I wore mostly A/W 12-3 current season pieces that are all available to buy right now (mirror leather jacket and knit-front sheer-backed top from Opening Ceremony, tulle covered knit skirt from Browns, mirror leather needlepoint bag from FarFetch) , an astonishing feat that shows how much buying love Rocha has received.  Beneath the pristine textures of slick silver and creamy knit and tulle though, I also wore a S/S 13 Ryan Lo mini jacket piece to inject a bit of decorative Crimbo spirit.  It's obviously way better to drink red-hued drinks like negronis and kir royales when decked out in iridescent tinsel thread painted with lilac, pink and red swirls of wool and dusted with yellow blooms.

Was there no media award? Like journalist of the year.
I thought Britain was all about the meeja.

The Isabella Award for Fashion Creator is sort of like the media award. This year, Katie Grand and Edward Enninful were nominated but Louise Wilson, the CSM MA course director won it (quite deservedly!). Theoretically a journalist could be nominated.
