Sale Spoils

Sale Spoils

>> The spoils of the Christopher Kane sale have already been feeding back to me so this is just another reminder that it's still on for another day and that they're restocking for today I hear too…

I went fairly early with no long queues to contend with unlike last time when it was also bitterly cold.  There's a card machine now and only ten people in at a time so it's a calm and collected affair.  As tempting as a ¬£750 S/S 10 beaded or gingham frock was I played the safe card with an A/W 09 piece for ¬£220.  List your spoils here if you wish… sample sale support is a must in the case of Kane's sale and any info is always appreciated!

Oh and the shoes have a tale to tell all on their own… more about them later… !

Are you freaking kidding me? This is almost too much for me to handle.
You hit the major jackpot. First the sample sale, next the dress you’re wearing and finally – those shoes.
I have to go lay down. Lightheaded. We’ve been robbed over here.

The AW09 collection actually ranks a little ahead of the SS10 collection in my affections, so I don’t think you did too badly out of the sale at all- the dark piping against the sheer nude chiffon is gorgeous, it’s like the more intricate version of that Kostas Murkurdis dress with the white piping you got from Berlin.
And do tell us the story of the shoes sometime!

220 here, 220 there, a pair of shoes here, a pair of shoes there….how much money do you actually spend on clothes? and im not buyng the story…oh they are an investment, like some sort of fashion archive…whatever!
and another intreguing question….how do you make money to afford to buy things like this and travel like you do. I mean, I am probably out of date, but i didnt know that having a blog is considered a full time job, beside that…who pays your monthly salary? there arent advert selling spaces on here….
im just wondering….or do you actually hold a full time job somewhere??

  22. susie_bubble

    2010-07-22 at 3:39 PM

    Mark: Errr… I didn’t actually give a story… no, my clothes aren’t an investment… they’re just for me and me alone…
As I said in my comment – IF YOU HAD READ – I have nothing to hide.
That said, I’m not accountable to you and where my money come from is ACTUALLY none of your business…
If you had asked in a slightly more polite tone, I would have GLADLY answered anyway so I’m doing so here perfunctorily…
I used to have a full time job at Dazed and now I work freelance doing projects for brands that involve writing, commissioning and also styling as well… I also blog for other people too and ads also come into it once in a while… (depending on where you are in the world you may not see the ads?)
I’m also incredibly lucky to be in a situation where I can get things on the cheap and I don’t shop as often as I did actually so in effect, I’m spending less money these days…
I’m not someone to shirk away from talking about money but I do believe there’s a more TACTFUL way of going about it and at the end of the day, my bank account is my business…

But bloggers make serious money now non? Many try and play it down? The Crumpet post a while back did sound v much like an advertorial, was it? not that it matters I guess but alot of bloggers are now doing the whole “stealth” brand marketing thing and its pretty obvious really they are getting paid. So has blogging lost a bity of its charm/intregrity now? I mean brands have really jumped on the whole online e-marketing and because of that many bloggers are getting oppotunities most fashion students can only dream of!

I was there on Wednesday – first in the queue!!!! I got a sheer brown dress, very similar to the pinky/peach C Kane dress you got from the last sample sale and I also got a mushroom cloud print skirt for good measure…although I may alter it to be a dress…is that wrong…to deconstruct a designer skirt….its only jersey after all?
Also I have to say its so unbeleiveably rude of people to ask you about your finances and to question where your money comes from. You could be a spoilt little rich girl for all it matters, its still nobodies business. And it makes me annoyed because you probably work ten times harder than alot of people, although your job is obviously far more enjoyable! Its like me, I own the usual culprits, McQueen, Prada, Chanel, Gucci, Kane, Biba….I get questioned by people…”how can YOU afford that?!” but when you tell people you work 7 days a week every week for the past 5 years, watch your pennies as best you can and commit yourself to trawling through the sample and online sales, they still cant seem to quite figure out where your money comes from??? So maybe you spent a little over ¬£200 on a Kane dress….its only the same as someone spending that on an outfit with shoes from Topshop is it not??

    2010-07-23 at 12:31 AM

Minnie: I HAVE NEVER taken on an advertorial whereby (and this is the strict definition) that a post is paid for by the company in monetary value.
That Crumpet post was ABSOLUTELY NOT paid for and is therefore not an advertorial. I was lent the product – product which I believe in… but that was it. It’s similar to a fashion team borrowing stuff to create an editorial shoot except i did it with one label and my own clothes…
You also have to officially say if you are posting an advertorial anyway…
There are grey areas of course – press trips, product lending etc… but my rule of thumb is – DO I LOVE WHAT I’M WRITING ABOUT or is there an interesting POINT to be brought up? I loved those Crumpet pieces…. loved what they do and weirdly found the connection between an old colleague and the person who founded Crumpet sort of funny… so I wrote about it…
I think people are quick to pass judgement but don’t realise that brands are not spending marketing/online budgets willy nilly on blogs direct! I should know – I worked in online advertising…
Bloggers aren’t making the millions that people purport them to be via their blogs directly (i.e. selling adspace or advertorials…) but in fashion blogging, rather their skillsets or ‘trademark’ as a blogger are being used in projects that are external to the blog…like Garance Dore shooting campaign for Moschino etc…
This is what I do now… and I’m not ashamed to say it – I’ve built the blog up for four years and I made a hard decision to give up my day job to devote my time to the blog and everything linked to it – it’s gotten to the point where if brands etc approach me to do external projects, I’m not ashamed to take them on especially since my remit is I have to love what the project is about…!
It doesn’t directly impact the blog because I’m selling a skillset – i.e. writing, imagemaking etc that doesn’t necessarily get talked about on the blog (well, unless I’m chuffed about it…!)… there’ll be some examples coming up that will perhaps illustrate my point but it’s not simply a case of “Oh that post was paid for!”… because that’s just a misguided assumption that doesn’t delve into how SPECIFICALLY bloggers earn an income…
Anyway, it feels silly to be having this long drawn out conversation on a comment thread… all I can say is I have NOTHING to hide – you ask and probe and I’ll give you a straight up answer without mentioning figures (because that’s none of your business…?)
    Anon: They’re S/S 10 and Browns stocks her I think! I bought them direct…

hi I have always loved this blog because you have a natural affiliation for writing, and making fashion interesting. i always wondered how you were able to travel so much as well, but common senese does denote that you are keeping up your work in the industry, and working damned hard too.
no one bats an eyelid at magazine editors creating fashion stories, by advertised designers, do people not know that these editors have to include the big fashion houses in order to be able to keep their revenue going?
Blogging is the best platfrom, as it offers individuals a chance to express their views, and opinions on the things they love without ulterior motive.
Back up player haters, as Ms Lau, is doing her thing, and doing an amazing job doing it. xx

Thanks for long reply! Interesting points raised about skillsets and blogs being businesses. I assumed a few things, easy to do online i guess but my point is, for any jobs that bloggers take the first and foremost thing companies are thinking is marketing and getting the brand name out there – at a fraction of traditional advertising costs – because they know bloggers will blog about it. I know because a PR friend blatantly said it. I am not targeting you but bloggers in general. The cash element just shows fashion blogging is now a lucrative line to be in.

I think (without speaking strictly in exact amounts) that more bloggers should discuss their finances. I have very little CC debt, but my friends are always baffled how I can afford a new Chloe bag or miu miu shoes. The answer is: ( for me at least) obeying off my own stuff, thrifting and turning a profit on stuff I paid very little for but also- not buying crap! My girlfriends don’t like to admit how much they spend on a $50 bag or shoes ALL THE TIME at high street shops. Over a few months- that’s a preowned Chloe bag!! But I’m fascinated by other bloggers deals and save ups- we are mostly all average girls who love fashion- why not talk more openly about the struggles? Debt is not a trend i want in on!!

Heya… none of these are nasty comments, I’m COOL with ppl asking and whilst I’m not sure people have the right to know the ins and outs, the general matters can be discussed – it’s a good convo actually!
I’m actually enjoying engaging on it but I’m wondering whether I should delve into it elsewhere… a guest post on Business of Fashion perhaps?
Minnie, I think blogging is really only lucrative for the rareified few and I’m discounting myself here because I’ve had a full time job for the bulk of the lifespan of the blog… I’m only really getting my head around what EXACTLY I’m doing in life…
It’s not something to get into and you expect a pot of cash waiting there…
First, you have to BUILD up your blog, get a decent amount of traffic before any brands even take notice of you and to do that, you have to love blogging, write passionately and be committed to what you’re doing….
Do all of that and then issues of work with brands (with monetary value or not…) then MAY start coming into play…it may not…
I just think people lazily portray it as something that takes no time at all – like they can start a blog and the cash will just start rolling in, it just DOESN’T work like that…
So, again, the ‘lucrative’ stroke just doesn’t cover all bloggers and I think it’s too difficult to generalise thus especially in a period of time when some fashion brands are still confused about the digitalsphere and don’t know where their budgets are going…
I could bang on and on and on about it because I’m a geek… hmmm… maybe I will…but not on this blog…not the right platform…

FTC regulations in America make it a statutory obligation for bloggers to disclose any commercial affiliation in posts. Even if that affiliation is just a sample or gift. They are actually held far more accountable than magazine journalists. (Believe me – I’ve been a print magazine editor for 14 years.)
I am at a loss to understand why people are a) so flippin aggressive about matters that are not their business b) so quick to believe we fashion bloggers are all on the take, with undercurrents of corruption.
Personally, I have always, always disclosed (pre & post- the FTC regs) if I am writing about a gift/sample/press trip as I, like Susie, like clarity in my dealings with my readers.
Sure, publicists & brands give us stuff from time to time. But surely the point of both of our blogs is that the content is dictated by our personal taste? (our curatorial eye if I wanted to be achingly pretentious?) And that means that we only write about stuff that is germane to our blogs, that fits our personal remit and, above all , that we like. My readers wld be very quick to call me out if they thought I was posting just for the sake of free shit.
I have a miles long disclosure section on my blog so my readers know EXACTLY how I conduct my business of blogging – I wld hope that readers look at Style Bubble & at LLG and the myriad of other bloggers out there and realise that the whole point of blogging is to be open, to have a relationship with our readers. We are hardly going to start sliding in undisclosed commercial affiliations. (And SHAME on any blogger who does so.)
Finally: Susie – and I – have been blogging for FREE for four years – surely it’s not a crime for us to finally enjoy the fruits of our unpaid and inordinately time-consuming labours? i.e invitations to sample sales, the occasional piece of gifted clothing, press trip etc if we always disclose the provenance of the post?
    LLGxx

    Dear Susie….
I read all this and I just had to react and answer….
First of all nobodies business where your money is from…
Second of all I put ten times more value into being on your blog then in famous fashion magazines I’ll tell you why….
For those of you who probably never heard of me, I’m a young fashion designer struggling every day to be able to keep creating small collections every season besides my daytime job…
Susie approached me more then two years ago when her blog wasn’t that famous….. and since then she has never stopped being curious about my work…. I never payed her, I never asked her to write about me, I simply e-mail her my news, when she likes it she puts it up…. I am swedish and swedish boring bloggers who are sponsored and payed ( not that there is something wrong with that….) have never tried to get to know my work or be curious about my news Susie on the other hand who is today one of the most interesting fashion bloggers have never stopped “looking” at my work, I don’t care if she writes about it or not the fact that she takes her time to see it is enough for me….
Susie, I love your blog and respect your talent….. Keep being the one you are and keep writing like you do…. we young fashion designers with no one around to help us count on you… and if you earn money doing what you’re good at then we’re happy for you…..
Rita Saardi, angry fashion designer that might soon give up simply because there aren’t many passionate bloggers and journalists like Susie who cares about us…..
    Shame on you…..

Whew! I miss the blog for a few days and look what happens!
The entire idea that bloggers don’t deserve to be compensated in any way is the root of a larger problem, one that will be surely a hot debate over the next “x” years. All people who work hard deserve good things to happen to them, anyone who says otherwise is jealous and lacks confidence. Those people should focus more on improving their own life rather than criticizing others for enjoying theirs.
Keep doing what you do Susie, there’s NOTHING wrong with it, and just like Nao and Rita, I’m eternally grateful for the support you’ve given me!
of note: every piece that Susie has commissioned from me she has paid for promptly without question! As far as surprise gifts I’ve sent her…well…I like Susie, I’ve been reading her blog since it was 6 months old and she shows me interesting things from around the world at no cost to myself. She does this because she loves it. And really, when it comes down to it…Susie is incredibly fun to dress! She’s not afraid of anything and styles things in a way I find endlessly inspiring.
