Come into my Closet

Ellesept >> The title isn't as creepy as it sounds.  Actually it's quite a non-sensical one at the moment seeing as my closet is basically MDF and screws in amongst a pile of clothing on the floor.  A few months ago, this wasn't the case and I did actually have a closet that was presentable enough to let the Elle UK magazine team in to rummage through, photograph with the help of props styling and *ahem* nonchalently placed hangers.

Now it's all out in new Elle's September issue and Rebecca Lowthorpe, fashion features director at Elle was able to cobble a three page article despite the fact my wardrobe or life isn't a smidge extensive as some of the people they have featured in the past (Amanda Harlech, Katie Hillier etc).  Without meaning to sound trite, Closet Confidential just happens to be my favourite bit in Elle and I was wary to begin with, thinking that my pad and my wardrobe wouldn't be up to scratch… me thinks Roksanda Ilincic, who was in the same feature a while back intimidated me slightly, with her glossy black surfaces, YSL-esque colours and err beautiful Roksanda herself.  I have pleather sofa, white washed walls and Ikea shelves.

Still, David Yeo the photographer managed to do a great job of bringing out the best of my rented digs and the shoes don't look half bad either despite the fact I keep everything in a battered state of disarray.  Thanks to the Elle team for a) making the shoot a relaxing one and b) bringing over a truly scrumptious meringue pie even though I'm normally a meringue hater…

(Some clothing credits weren't mentioned but thanks to Modernist, Rupert Sanderson, Emilio de la Morena, Cooperative Designs and I Heart Norwegian Wood for augmenting the piece in their own mysterious ways…)

**EDIT** Well spotted reader… they did get my flat location slightly wrong…. I'm actually based in North London, not East…. as much as that confuzzles people in the office, the majority living in and around Hackney…

anyone know if elle uk is stocked anywhere in sydney, australia? i really wanna get my hands on this – this is fashion history in the making!
ps. 3-4 hours sleep a night?! 😐 susie you must be some kind of machine…perhaps of the black sequined robot variety πŸ˜‰

  3. such a beautiful and well-represented article as a tribute to you. You are the reason why i feel comfortable wearing something a bit off beat once in awhile! x

  4. You are simply too modest, Susie. The spread is FANTASTIC, you look gorgeous, and seeing those shoes peek out from every photo is making me quake with jealousy. Congrats, doll!

  5. Hi Susie and everybody in here!
I’m Pedro a follower of your AWESOME blog.
I’ve just started my own blog on blogger, so check it out!

  6. Oh great, there’s a similar feature in the italian version and I like it a lot. All in all, Elle is my favorite of the italian “classic” magazines. I’ve never read the british one though.

  7. i’ve just read it and i wanted to have a good look on your blog, i’m impressed! elle! well done
i was quite shocked to hear that people call you fat & ugly, it’s pathetic, your really not at all

  8. I saw this and I’m very happy for you πŸ™‚ One thing though, I thought you lived in North London [Holloway]- I live in Tufnell Park πŸ™‚ But in the article it says you live in East London?

  9. Great feature! I’m going to buy that issue as soon as it hits the Dutch stands!
By the way, has it become tradition or something? I mean, last year and the year before that Lindsay was also on the cover of the Elle September issue.. I don’t mind though πŸ™‚ I know how a lot of people dislike her but I quite like her style, and was a fan for a long time πŸ˜‰

  10. Gorgeous spread! I’m going to have a look for it here in Mtl! They did a great job, except for the missed clothing credits as you mentioned, but in general that’s my experience with mags, bloggers are generally just much more courteous! πŸ˜‰

  11. Yay!! I can’t think of anyone who deserves this more than you do. Honestly, I’d rather read about you than Amanda Harlech any day. No joke.

  12. This is absolutely wonderful. I find your blog incredibly down-to-earth, while remaining inimitably interesting and above the fold. Your profile pic says it all. Congratulations, Susie!

  13. Awesome spread and great achievement, Susie! But you know, the slant of the article just makes me think about how behind fashion mags are in terms of delivering news anymore. To me and other regular readers of your blog, or to anyone who follows fashion online this is all old news, re-packaged with new, glossy (wonderful) photos…

  14. I have admit, I have somewhat strayed from the holy trinity of fashion blogs (Susie, K.o.s, jack and jill) but this artical reminded me of what I love about ur blog! Thanks Suse, you really do rock! xxx

  15. Oh yay!!
I loved reading this and congrats! Despite whatever glamour you think your apartment is lacking all the fantastic pieces of clothing and shoes make up for it. Love

  16. Ooh! Congratulations on such a brilliant feature! Can’t wait to get my hands on this issue, although it may take a while for it reach here in non-air freight prices. Loved reading it, and the pics turned out beautifully! πŸ™‚

  17. Susie, i thought the feature was great and to tell you the honest truth every time i see a closet confidential with someone that has a never ending bank account, i tell myself; ‘of course they have fabulous things, i would have a crapload of fabulous things if i had that money too!’. it’s refreshing to see a REAL feature. Bravo!

  18. Susie, that’s just fabulous, congrats!
The cage dress really rocks the shelve, even though Angie didn’t receive the credit she deserves.

  19. I am so happy for you! As an avid reader of your blog and elle, its lovely to see you ‘in print’ especially as you come across so sweetly.

  20. congrats Susie!! you totally deserved this!
I really enjoyed the article, I am going to buy the magazine so I have a hard copy!
Thank you also for supporting the guys and girls who are selling their designs on Etsy! I love that you talked about that in the interview!

You will always be my very favorite blogger, since you tracked down and mailed a pair of TopShop platform booties to me all the way here in Kansas, back in the days of “Little Miss UPS”. I love reading your blog, and your fame is well-deserved!
    Keep writing, Susie!

  24. I’ve wanted to do a photoshoot with you since I first read your blog. but now that you got Elle pedigree… I’ve got no chance πŸ™‚

  25. I just read the Elle Sept issue and had to look you up πŸ˜‰ brilliant idea, style, clothes and all… congratulations and keep at it πŸ™‚

  26. What a great article! Closet Confidential is my favourite part of Elle too, well done on being featured πŸ™‚ I love the purple skirt you wore in the main picture and would love to know where you got it. Also, yay that you mentioned Etsy! I’ve got a couple of shops on there myself, it’s a great site. Your blog is awesome, so glad this article introduced me to it πŸ˜€

  27. Great article.
I absolutely adore the skirt you’re wearing in the first picture! Could you please tell me the name of the Etsy seller?
